Established in Cairo in 1868, it was constituted as a legal entity in 1899 and placed under the patronage of the Italian Government.
Among the aims of the Society, listed in the statute approved by Royal Decree no. 105 of 6 April 1899 and published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale of 4 May 1899, are:
- providing medical assistance to indigent persons and arranging their admission to hospital;
- arranging necessary and duly verified repatriations;
- granting financial assistance to indigent persons deemed deserving;
- covering the burial expenses of indigent persons.

The Society administers and supports the Italian Umberto I Hospital, inaugurated in 1903.
