Scope and content
Among the repertories of the Criminal Court of the Cairo Consulate are:
- registers of criminal judgments from 1861 to 1930;
- and registers of criminal case files from 1912 to 1937.
The latter are compiled in accordance with Article 251 of the 1866 Consular Regulations, which provides that “every criminal proceeding” conducted by the consul be recorded in a dedicated register, stating:
- name, surname and residence of the accused;
- name, surname and residence of the injured party;
- nature of the offence under investigation;
- measures issued during the investigation or definitively.
Today these registers, together with the indexes that accompanied them and enabled offices to navigate the very large number of cases, constitute a true archival inventory.
