An act of notoriety is a public act required to prove certain facts, statuses or personal qualities.
It is therefore a written document drawn up before a public official, who may be a notary or a court clerk. Such acts are predominantly drawn up for succession purposes.

Many declarations are issued in the absence of a will (intestacy, ab intestato), i.e. declarations concerning the existence of “next of kin”.
