Article 20 of the Consular Law of 28 January 1866 no. 2804 establishes that consuls hold the capacity of notaries with respect to nationals.
The consul therefore acts as a notary, drafting, authenticating and preserving deeds. The consul receives wills, both public and secret; draws up protests for non-acceptance or non-payment; authenticates commercial books; issues certified copies of deeds executed or deposited with the Chancellery; and provides translations of documentation from the language of the place of residence.
