Archival history

The papers of the Italian Consulate in Alexandria of Egypt were transferred to the ASDMAE at the end of the 1970s directly from the consular offices that created them. They were transferred in bundled consignments, that is, in generally coherent or homogeneous groups, accompanied by inventory cards. The parcels were in turn placed in large, numbered jute sacks. The sacks, in the form in which they had been sent from the creator, remained in storage for several years without being physically rearranged.

In the mid-1990s, under the supervision of the then ASDMAE Director Vincenzo Pellegrini, a first arrangement took place. Almost all the papers were then placed in folders, with some of the information provided by the creator on the back. The documents were also placed on the shelves in a logical order reflecting the functions carried out by the Consulate. The information provided to the Ministry by the office of Alexandria are, as the census showed, generally accurate, although in some cases incomplete. In summary, the structure and content of the documents, now collected in folders, was described and easily understood to the extent that it was in the offices in Alexandria.

In time, the material has partially lost its physical order, but the archival efforts made by the staff of the ASDMAE were not in vain. In fact, the information on the backs of the folders and the transfer lists found in the files of the ASDMAE made it possible to carry out, with a certain degree of speed, a general survey of the papers, which mainly, but not exclusively, consisted of the criminal and civil proceedings of the consular tribunals and related documents.
